What hairbrush should I be using?

Beyond the Consultation….

Ok. So your consultation with your hairdresser went great and your new hairstyle and color are both amazing. You purchased the color conserve shampoo and conditioner to maintain your color and you have the styling products to style your hair out that fit you like a glove. You are ready to go…but wait…Did you make sure to get the right brushes?

Many of us have a great selection of brushes, combs, and maybe even a flatiron to help perfect our style, but often we overlook easy steps that can speed up the process for us. Where every style is a little different and will require variation in the final finishing process, if you have hair that requires smoothing or that last minute blast of volume at the top you will definitely need two types of brushes to help you along the way.

What you will need is a brush for detangling and another for the actual styling. A basic grooming brush will help to remove tangles, stimulate your scalp and enhance a natural shine to your hair; a second brush will work with the heat of the blow-dryer to shape the hair. Here is a breakdown of different brushes and their purpose to get you started. Remember, your stylist will recommend the best one for you and your individual needs.

Tip: The shape of the brush dictates how it’s used.

Flat Cushion Brush: This brush is used to detangle and helps encourage shine by distributing essential scalp oils. The bristles can come in either boar bristles or a nylon-boar combination that are set in a flexible cushion base to contour your scalp. Boar bristles are designed to smooth the hair and make it shiny. This type of brush is a “feel-good” brush.

Vent Brush: This brush is great for adding volume to fine hair or setting wet hair into place if you want to allow your hair to naturally air dry. The bristles are best when they are ball-tipped and widely spaced apart to allow the air to vent through. I love this brush because it shortens the drying time and prevents excessive drying that may otherwise damage finer hair textures that are delicate.

Round Brush: This brush is best for recreating that perfect salon blow-out look. You can achieve a beautiful smooth look with volume coming from the scalp. These come in several different barrel sizes…I recommend buying the same size that your stylist uses as everyone is different.

Paddle Brush:
This remarkable brush detangles, smoothes, counter-acts static electricity and straightens. Paddle brushes come with, boar bristles, boar-nylon combination or nylon. If you need shine use the boar bristles. If you have thicker hair try the combination bristles. For straightening I would recommend one with ball-tipped nylon bristles. ( If the round brush is difficult for you I would recommend this type.)

I use the AVEDA Wooden Paddle to massage my scalp in the morning and before I go to bed to stimulate my scalp and my natural oil production, which is essential in the Austin climate. I also use this brush on nearly every client in the salon because it works through a lot of hair with each stroke.

My Top Pick and Favorite! The AVEDA Wooden Paddle Brush. Ask your stylist to use it on you during your next appointment and take one home with you.

Easy Ultra Chic (not to mention Sexy!) hairstyles for the weekend!

Messy, Sexy bed head twisted back with your favorite glam clip.
This is a great style! Everything guys love-messy, sexy hair. And everything girls love- glam and sparkles rolled into one.  I kid! But seriously this is an easy look to create. Its chic and weekend appropriate, especially for the morning after a late night.
Simply spray your bed head hair with a light mist of Aveda’s Medium Hold Hairspray.  Run fingers through hair to smooth the frizzy areas and scrunch where needed.  Twist your bangs/front section of hair away from face.  Continue to the side of your hair right above your ear and secure with your prettiest hair accessory & Voila!  Now off to Brunch!
The Sassy Side ponytail
Oh how I love ponytails! I cannot tell you how many mornings my hair just was not looking cute or professional and I simply did not have time to shampoo/blowdry.  This is a great look for work & play!  Also keep in mind you can wear your ponytail on the side (low) or behind the head (low or high).  Please keep in mind that if your hair is not long or atleast a few inches past your shoulders-keep it in the back (low)! If you have bangs style them out and wear them as usual.  Apply a small amount of Aveda’s Hair Potion to the top, sides & back of hair. (Be sure you lift hair to get close to the roots! Doesn’t take much!) Start by teasing the hair right behind the bangs.  (If you dont have “bangs” tease at the beginning of your hairline).  Also tease on the sides of your hair for a full look.  Take it all the way to the back just below the occipital bone (that’s the big bump in the back of your head).  Comb back to make smooth.  Lightly spray with Aveda’s Witch Hazel Spray, smooth the hair a bit more.  Gather hair where you want the ponytail to be & tie it up!  Use teasing comb to pull out areas that might have fallen.
Braided Head Band
Dont panic ladies!  You do not need to be able to braid your on hair for this one!  Simply try your local Sally’s for some weave.  They have all kinds of hair pieces to play with, thanks to Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson. Either find a long braided piece to work with or get a small bag of hair you can braid at home.  But please, please, please be sure the hair you buy matches your own. Do not take the Sally’s girls word for it!  Ask to pull it out & put it close to your own.  Bring a friend for a second set of eyes. Like in the earlier style… If you have bangs, style out as usual.  If not, begin to tease from the front of hair to the middle of the top of the head.  I suggest the bed head look for the rest of the hair ( messy & sexy).  See first hairstyle for bed head look.  Smooth out front of hair with comb after teasing, lightly mist with Aveda’s Witch Hazel Spray.  Secure braid behind your teased “bump” or your bangs with bobby pins behind the ear and under your hair.  ( Just like a headband )  Cris Cross your pins to lock them, like the letter X.  Also you might add one at the top of the braid for extra security.
Have fun looking fabulous!

Keep your body hydrated!

With the summer months approaching, knowing how to stay properly hydrated and knowing the signs of dehydration are essential in central texas. Here are a few tips on keeping your body running:

  • Aim for 8-10 8oz glasses of water a day. Make sure to drink more if doing a lot of activity.
  • Drinking enough water helps keep your skin looking younger and more vibrant.
  • Fruits and Vegetables are 80% – 90% water by weight, make sure to include these in your daily diet.
  • Include sports drinks with at least 110 ml of sodium per 8oz when running or during activity over a 1 hour period or longer. This helps replenish sodium lost through sweating.
  • Drinking water also helps slow your appetite.
  • Want to know the easiest way to tell if your hydrated? Check the color of your urine, if its dark yellow and or cloudy, get some water pronto! Clear to light yellow means your right on target.
  • Dont wait until your thirsty to drink water, by that point you are already dehydrated. Make sure you replenish your lost fluids ASAP.
  • When dehydrated your attention and concentration can decrease by 13%, that 8-10 glasses a day will help keep you concentrated and focused.
  • You can drink too much water, in fact it can lead to water intoxication. Most common in infants under 6 months and athletes. Healthy adult kidneys can process 15 liters of water, so drink over time, not enormous volumes at once.

Be smart stay hydrated, and have fun this summer!

Which Sunscreen should I use?

SPF Sunscreen

Dear Sun Lovers,

Spring break is upon us with summer right around the corner! If your wanting to keep your skin looking bright and beautiful, start your sunblock routine today! SPF 15-30 is going to give you the best overall coverage on you face and neck. For the rest of your body I recommend SPF 50. Did you know that just by driving in your car your skin is being exposed to the harsh Texas sun? A lot of people get dark spots on the side of their face from that type of sun exposure.

The key thing to look for when purchasing sunblock are the words “protects against UV”. UV rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are the main culprits in premature aging and wrinkling of the skin. Oxupensone, Sulisobenzone and Parsol are the chemicals in sunscreen protecting you against as much UV rays as possible.

Its just as important to know how well your sunblock is going to stay on after swimming, perspiring, etc. A lot of people ask, “Is there a difference between water proof and water resistant sunscreen?”.  The FDA considers a product “water resistant” if it maintains the SPF level after 40 mins of water exposure, after 80 minutes it is considered “water proof”. If you participate in outdoor recreation activities including swimming I would definetly recommend the waterproof sunscreen for you.

Remember! Keep your beautiful skin safe this summer with SPF right for you.

Should I get bangs?

When clients are looking for a change, it seems the question about bangs is always asked. I think adding bangs to your style is a great idea to create a subtle change.

Here are some things to consider before going with “fringe”

Your hair type- curly, thick, thin

Hair part- do you go straight down the middle or to a side

One of the most important considerations is hairline recession! A cowlick will definitely amp up styling time, and you need to be careful where bangs lay with a widows peak in the picture.

Once we take all of these things into consideration its our job as the professional to make sure we help you make the right decision. One bang complaint I have heard before had nothing to do with the style (they looked great) but their function. While at work and looking down at her desk the bangs would get in the way. Make sure you consider your lifestyle as well when making your style change. If you are a ponytail girl then you will need bangs long enough to swoop and tuck behind your ear. Short bangs in that situation would involve bobby pins and or head bands.

Remember this! We are here and more than happy to help you with your style change. We can all appreciate the Do-it-yourself-er but if your reading this, you don’t have to. If the only time you think about cutting bangs is after two glasses of red wine, please put down the chicken shears and call us. Between your regular haircuts we even offer complimentary ”fringe benefits” for bang upkeep between visits.

The natural dry skin remedy!

Every year we look forward to the holiday season. But with the cold dry air and our heaters running, our skin suffers. I have a simple, easy and affordable way to hydrate your skin that is as natural as it gets!

In so many skin and hair care products you see jojoba oil, macadamia nut oil and or grapeseed oil. These are all used for hydration and moisture. They also have the closest to the same PH as the oil our bodies secrete. So they are absorbed right into the skin without leaving a oily film on top (like baby oil). As I set out to find these oils I wanted to find one that was not too expensive and easy to get. While you can find jojoba and macadamia nut oils at specialty stores they are also a bit pricy. Grapeseed oil was everywhere and less expensive than a bottle of lotion! I also wanted to make it smell nice! After all I am putting this all over my skin. According to the princaples of aromatherapy our bodies respond to what we smell. So I came up with a formula for me that would also benefit my health, here it is!

4 oz grapeseed oil

20 drops Lavender (to calm)

10 drops Eucalyptus (for congestion)

10 drops Rose Geranium (anti viral)

Get a plastic bottle you can keep in your shower (sally’s under $2) and filler up! Apply before you dry off, from your head to toes, even your face. It will not clog your pores! And feel free to come up with your own essential oil scent. That’s what makes it personal and fun!
